Jim Crow laws were usaed between the 1800's and the 1900's. They were laws that separated the African Americans from the Whites. They were basically social laws, like not allowing African Americans to use "white" water fountains, or segregating restaurants and buses.

In the 1800's Jim Crow laws were used. These laws made whites and blacks seperate but not equal. The whites and blacks went to different schools (seperate) but the white schools were much beter (not equal).

Jim Crow laws was created after a song called "Jump Jim Crow." This song originated around the time when the civil war ended. Jim Crow laws were designed to make both blacks and whites "seperate but equal." The seperate part happened but not the equal part. Homer Plessy in the case Plessy vs. Ferguson tried to end Jim Crow laws. However the courts decided that "seperate but equal" was constitutional.

T.R. Davidson was an African American in the 1940's during the Jim Crow laws. Remebering about his experience during Jim Crow laws, he said, "You always had to make a special effort... to find out the places where you could go, where you wouldn't be embarrassed or refused service. So, if you were in a strange place, no matter what part of the country it was, you had to say, 'Where do they serve black people?'"

This is how T.R. Davidson felt during the 1940's, and this shows what an empact the Jim Crow laws had on African Americans.

Jim Crow laws were used in the southern states. In the civil war the coonfederates were obvously mad because now they have to free their slaves, do you think that that stopped them from treating the blacks like scum? It didn't. The south used separate but equal laws (jim crow laws) so that they could be maean to the African Americans. Separate but equal was constitutional but in my mind it is unacceptable. First, we discriminate living things from non-living things. Furniture does not get any rights. Then we discriminate animals from plants. Have you met a flower who gets to vote? Then we dicriminate humans from othe animals. We don't let elephants run for president. Now we want do discriminate humans from humans! Unnacceaptable! Part of it might have been because many whites were jealous of the blacks. African Americans contributed a lot to sports and music. Jim Crow laws were used to mock them.

I think the Jim Crow laws were used to take the blame off of white Americans. Since, the laws were so unfair, most African Americans were upset. However, the whites probably told the blacks that it wasn't their fault, it was Jim Crow's. But Jim Crow was a fictional character so no one could really be blamed. This most likely brought pleasure to whites because then the blacks would go along with the laws not knowing who to protest for their mistreatment.
